The minimum for a decent, enjoyable stay on oahu would be:
$100/night for hotel, $80/night at the Hale Koa if you’re military
$35/day for a rental car (which you don’t really need because oahu has fantastic public transportation)
or $40/person for a monthly bus pass plus $50 each way from the airport for taxi
$60/person/day for food
Money for shopping
Money for attractions and misc., some of which include:
Polynesian cultural center ($120/person for admission + luau)
Paradise cove luau ($40/person)
Hanauma bay (snorkeling)
Catamaran cruises
Surfboard rentals
Skydiving
Parasailing
Kayaking
Etc.

Yes it does depend on where you go but also where you book. I use a corporate travel broker every time I go to Hawaii & I’ve saved a ton. They have room packages prepaid that they buy in bulk – packages that don’t get used are sold to the public for dirt cheap. You can get 5-8 days for $400 or $500!

If you’re on a budget, definitely check out this site.

They also have an Oahu Fun Pass & it lets you do some REALLY cool stuff all for free. Well, the pass is $150 but each activity is usually around $50 & you can use it an unlimited # of times as many activities as you want so it’s a great deal.

You can snorkel, kayak, check out Iolani palace, take the Diamond Head tour, Catamaran ride – & all kinds of cool stuff. The tours in Hawaii are usually MUCH more fun than you’d expect & you can get off the beaten path with many of them.

My husband and I went to Oahu Feb. 2008. I rented our car online when I booked our flight, and also booked our sunset dinner cruise online and the day at the Polynesian Cultural Center. We took $2000 cash with us to have and we used pretty much all of it on food, souvenirs, gas for the car, etc.

Well your first step is to figure out how much your flights and hotel will cost (try using sites like Travelocity or Expedia where you can sometimes get good package deals). Add a rental car cost in if you are planning to get one (you can do that on the travel sites as well). Then, depending on what you want to do while you are there, add at least $1,000 per week for spending money to do all the touristy stuff, shop, eat, etc.

My husband and I spent a week on Oahu, and rented a condo rather than a hotel room, and we had a rental car. The condo probably saved us a little bit of money because we could eat in sometimes and save on eating out at restaurants. We did a handful of touristy stuff, usually ate one meal out per day, and spent the rest of our time just hanging out on the beach, or driving around/finding places we could go for a walk and enjoying the scenery. We had about $1,000 spending money for the week and managed to do just fine. We probably could have spent more on other touristy things we didn’t get to, but we did ok without.
