The Aloha Robert Travel Show – O’ahu is the third largest island in the Hawaiian chain. It is home to about three-fourths of the state’s population. Honolulu is the state capitol and the 11th largest U.S. metropolitan city. Waikiki, the most world-renowned site in O’ahu, is the top visitor destination of the state. Hawaii DFS Cuts 130 Jobs

Another big business in Hawaii is making layoffs. This time, 130 people are losing their jobs.

The DFS Group, or Duty Free Shopper Group, which has about 40 stores in the state, told employees about the layoffs Thursday.

One hundred and twenty people were let go immediately. Another ten will be kept until the end of the year.

DFS caters to tourists. Most of its stores are at the airport in Honolulu.

A company executive tells us the layoffs are the result of the downturn in tourism and corporate restructuring.

“The downturn in tourism here in the islands has affected everyone,” said state tourism liaison Marsha Wienert. “And there is no business that is immune to it. Duty Free made some very tough decisions as many of our businesses have had to do.”

The 130 layoffs at DFS represent about 16 percent of the companys 800 employees in Hawaii.

When DFS founder Chuck Feeney sold the company to Frances LVMH Moët Hennessy • Louis Vuitton in 1997, he gave $26 million of the sale profits to 2400 long-time staff members
