I vote for the Royal Hawaiian also. We just stayed there, in June, for the first time in 18 years. It's still great.
References :
On Oahu, if you want big and busy and fun and exciting, then stay at Hilton Hawaiian Village. But if you want peace and quiet and pampering luxury, then stay at Hale Kulani.

On Maui, if you want big and beutiful and fancy pools and fun, stay at the Grand Wailea. But if you want peaceful pampering ultimate service, stay at Four Seasons.

Details about most Maui hotels, including photos of buildings, rooms, beaches and pools, are on the Hotels-Condos tab of

Depends on the Island. If you're looking for luxury + privacy (and money really isn't an issue):

Oahu - The Kahala (ask for one of their newly renovated rooms), Halekulani (in Waikiki, but private and elegant), or JW Marriott Ihilani (out of town, but one of the top high end properties on island.

Maui - Four Seasons Wailea is known as one of the top resorts in U.S. (5-diamond hotel), Grand Wailea and the Fairmont Kea Lani (all suites hotel) are not bad either.

Kauai - Grand Hyatt Kauai or Princeville Resort

Big Island - Four Seasons Hualalai (5-diamond hotel).
References :
Depends on the island.
On Oahu, though lovely, the Hilton Hawaiian Village (someone else mentioned it) is extremely touristy and busy. It's not at all private. If you want something truly private on Oahu you would most likely need to go to the North Shore. Turtle Bay, maybe? In Waikiki, I recommend the Royal Hawaiian. It's absolutely beautiful and it's on a great stretch of Waikiki Beach.
Maui - Grand Wailea or Ritz Carlton Kapalua
Kauai - Hyatt Regency
Big Island - Four Seasons Hualalai, The Orchid at Mauna Lani, Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows, or Kona Village Resort. KVR offers private hales (hah-lay, which means 'house'), no TVs, total tranquility. It's pricey but very exclusive and quite beautiful.

If you're going to Oahu, my choice is either the Hilton Hawaiian Village at the edge of the Waikiki strip or Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore. Turtle Bay pulls ahead for the privacy bit although the HHV is at the end of the strip, and has it's own 'village' of shops and restaurants so you are fairly secluded with all of the amenities on site. Turtle Bay has been going through some trouble lately but I haven't heard that they are closed.
