Maui is the best – it has more to do than Kauai (which is also lovely. Molokai & lanai are too small to do much on, Only the Kona coast of the Big island is nice. As for Oahu, Honolulu is just a big city – you have to go to the North shore to enjoy the beach. I’ve gone on Hawaiian, United & Alaskan – they’re all okay – go for the best deal. In Maui I satyed at the Prince & the Ritz Carlton, in Kauai at the Sheraton & Hyatt in Poipu

Okay. Picture Hawaii in your head.
Do you picture a long white sand beach, with waves rolling in, birds singing peacefully and turtles peeking their heads above the dark blue water, smiling at you as they catch a quick breath?
Or do you picture a huge city, with traffic galore, tourists everywhere, rolling blackouts (thanks to the recent earthquake) and dark dirty water with huge waves that can rip your body apart in an instant? It depends on what you want dude, but trust me. Oahu, and Maui are not true representatives of what Hawaii is about. They are totally industrialized and trying to turn themselves into cities seen in the mainland; LA, New York etc..

The best bet for a nice island like vacation,(paradise and fun included) is to visit the Big Island, Kauai or Lanai. Lanai can get expensive, Kauai is kind of cut off from everything, but the Big Island is a precious gem sitting in the middle of the most beautiful ocean in the world.
      How do I know?

      I live in Hawaii.

Good luck, and maybe I’ll be seeing you around.

It depends on what kind of traveler you are.

Like shopping, dinning, culture, & crowds? Go to OAHU
Great beaches, Killer surfing (esp north shore), best shopping for 3000 miles, Real night life, & it’s small enough to see most everything in an extended weekend.

Want to lay out on a dozen fantastic beaches? MAUI is for you.
Lots to do! A week will leave you wishing for another day or two to see a few missed treats. Amazing Black sand Beaches.

Get away away on an adventure? Hike the Napali Coast in Kauai.
Or just get away from it all on the much less developed Kauai.

My personal favorite is the Big Island, Hawaii itself; but I lean to the adventurous side of travel.

It’s got almost everything somewhere, & boasts some Iconic Hawaiian images unavailable or difficult to access on other islands.
Volcano’s and Lava for one (or two), the observatory, & some of the best/healthiest Reefs in the Pacific yielding the best snorkeling and diving in the islands, especially right off the shore.
Beaches aren’t as plentiful as elsewhere, but they don’t seem as crowded, and even a 30 min drive to get to one (or a different one) still beats fighting traffic, and looking for parking at Waikiki.

It is BIG though, and you can rack up the driving miles trying to see it all. A week wasn’t enough on my last visit.

Where to stay? It’s really all about your budget, You can find everything from camp sites to W Suites & Private Villas on most islands. I often find the best deals in Private rental condo’s or homes.

Airlines? They all seem similarly miserable these days.
Personally I’m usually most concerned about the flight times and layovers.
Overnight flights to the islands and Morning flights Back are typically the emptiest (I love having 3 seats to sleep on!).

On my last trip my flight left at 8AM, we went out the night before for one last hurrah. Breakfast at about 1am, a moonlight hike to keep us going for a bit and hit the airport about 6:30 AM.
I fell asleep (stenched out) sometime during takeoff, and woke as the brakes first grabbed the wheels on landing.

My favorite island to go to is Kauai. I live on Oahu and it is busy. On kauai I stayed at the Marriott who has the best pool ever!! On the Big island we stayed at King Kamehameha hotel. It was in renovation and completely sucked.
