I know there is a Costco and Walmart there. But at Costco, you need to buy bulk and I’m not sure there is food at the local Walmart. If I wanted produce, where should I go for good prices?
Hi! Try a farmer’s market for super fresh and affordable produce:
Kailua Village Farmer’s Market: Flowers, produce, macnuts and coffee. Every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Across from Hale Halawai, Kailua-Kona.
Keauhou Farmer’s Market: Every Saturday, from 8:00AM to noon at Keauhou Shopping Center, fronting Ace Hardware. All products are home grown in Hawaii – fruits, vegetables, flowers, coffee, macadamia nuts & more. Music too!
Kona International Market: Tuesday thru Sunday, from 9am to 5pm, at a large new open-air facility built specially for it near HPM in the Old Industrial Area on Luhia St. Flowers, fruits & vegetables, crafts, clothes, ‘ukulele. Many area vendors have relocated here from other farmers markets around town.
South Kona Fruit Stand: Tropical fruits and plants near the old Higashi store, Mon-Sat, 9 am to 6 pm, Sun, "10ish" to 5pm; 84-4770 Mamalahoa Hwy. in Captain Cook. Info: 328-8547.
If you don’t like farmer’s markets, there’s always good old Foodland:

I have searced online for car rentals and cannot find reasonable rates. I am going to Kona this May for 2 weeks. The lowest price I can find is $509(thats $36 a day with fees) for an economy car for 2 weeks. There must be some places in Kona that do not advertise on the internet that are cheaper. Need phone numberrs if possible, please. You help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
Here are a list of smaller car rental companies in Kona…

There is a reason that Akaka Falls rates as the most visited tourist sites on the island of Hawai’i. Simply put, the 420 foot, free falling plunge of clear water down a fern festooned cliff is an amazing and beautiful site. Leaving the parking lot, the loop trail immediately splits. Going left through fern, ginger, impatiens and bamboo, one reaches Akaka Falls in 5-8 minutes of ambling. If you turn right, the trail loops up and down some hills, through a wonderful jungle of flowers, ferns, heliconia, palms and bamboo to 100 foot tall Kahuna Falls in about 15 minutes of walking; Akaka Falls is then reached by following the same path another 5 minutes and 5-8 minutes after that you are back at the parking lot.
Almost every town in Hawai’i has a “Wainuenue street”. From the Hawai’ian syllables “wai” meaning “fresh water” and “nue” meaning “colorful” or “dancing”, the word “wainuenue” refers to the rainbow seen in waterfalls. If you are lucky, and approach Akaka Falls on a sunny morning when the sun shines into to grotto, you may be blessed with seeing this lovely Hawai’ian icon, the wainuenue.
When visiting Akaka Falls, be sure to save some time to explore the shops, galleries and cafes of Honomu on the way back to the highway; it’s unlike anywhere you’ve ever been before…guaranteed.

I’m not surewhat to pack I have shorts capris tanks and 3 terry cloth leasure suits .I’m not sure what it’s like there .
Are the nights really cold ?
Mostly what you have described will do the trick, but some sort of light jacket for the evening & an umbrella will be good insurance. Usually that time of year the weather is pretty good, but it is towards the tail end of rainy season, so it’s better to be prepared/
We are going to Hawaii in October for our honeymoon, and we want to do things that are fun and memorable without all the crowds. Also, we’re on a budget. I know that the middle of October is when they have their "aloha festivals", and if anyone has more information on that I would appreciate it. Thanks.
Good choice picking Kona and the Big Island. They are definitely the road less traveled (so to speak).
A day trip to Volcanoes National Park is well worth doing. It’s a few hours drive and can be cold up there so some people don’t bother. On the way there, visit the green sand beach (there are only two in the world) and a black sand beach. You can find directions in the Big Island guide book (part of the "Revealed" series). These guidebooks are written by locals and are the best of the bunch.
While you’re driving to Volcano’s: tune your radio to KAPA FM for some great local music. The local call-ins are also really fun to hear. Also check the Nat’l Park website (see link below) to see if the lava is flowing where you can see it.
Also on the way to Volcano’s is the southernmost point of the U.S. All of Kona is black lava rock, but in some places there are all these smaller white rocks. People use them to spell out words, so, think of what you want to spell "Our Hawai’i Honeymoon" (for example) and take a photo to kick off your photo slideshow when you get home.
The Seahorse Farm is a fun stop (even thought it’s a tourist attraction). You can see a pregnant male and find out what it feels like to have a seahorse wrap its tail around your finger.
Something else I’d highly HIGHLY recommend is either scuba dive or snorkel with the manta rays. It’s on the list of 100 things to do before you die and something that will make your trip really memorable. Jack’s Diving Locker is a great operation (that’s who I went with) and they offer either snorkel or diving experiences. There’s a hot shower on the boat too which you’ll really appreciate.
The Coffee Shack is a great breakfast or lunch spot. It’s quaint and not expensive. The balcony seating overlooks the Kona Coast and offers a casual, but incredibly scenic, dining experience.
Aloha Angels is another good breakfast spot. Got a great community vibe, not touristy at all, just a local cafe.
I’ve heard the Kona Brewery Tour is fun but haven’t done it myself.
Sorry I wasn’t able to find any info for you on the aloha festivals.
Have a great trip!
I went to Kona, Hawaii to be the keynote speaker at the Big Island Visitors Bureau luncheon. But I stayed at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa and the The Four Seasons Resort Hualālai

what is there to do in kona hawaii. i tried looking it up but it didn’t give me much besides sight seeing and hiking not that i don’t like to do those things but i need more to do.
at Kona, we did three really cool things:
- took a submarine ride along the bay (really) only lasts an hour– but was very cool.
- we took a zodiac boat ride (cool guys) along the coastline to see caves, lava tubes, dolphins, a green turtle. wow. it was greatness.
- we went snorkeling at a cove just a few miles down from the port. same spot where capt cook was killed- they have a marker and the small spit of land is actually British territory (good trivial pursuit info) the reef was wonderful, the water clear and the fish colorful and lively. it was the best snorkel spot i’ve ever visited (only done it about 6 times, but this was the best!)
This time takeoff with United from Big Island Hawaii with United Airlines Flight UA3 . United has aliance with Lufthansa.
As always good music and nice views on the highest summits on Pacific Ocean. Enjoy.
