Hawaii Statehood Dance Festival (Anchorage, Alaska)

Posted by admin on July 14th, 2010 and filed under hawaii attractions | 6 Comments »

Talofa, everyone. Let’s get outdoors and have some fun! Here I am Downtown again, supporting a good cause. This time Alaska celebrates our neighbors from the far South during the ADP (Anchorage Downtown Project) Hawaii Day Celebration (Hawaii Statehood Celebration). There is music and dance during these non-profit celebrations. See hot island girls dancing and guys with flaming batons. I found out later that the party usually runs from 1:00pm – 3:00pm in Peratrovich Park in Downtown Anchorage, if you’re lucky enough to catch it. I was fortunate to be walking by at the right time with enough room in my camera to capture some of the action.

Thanks for letting me tape this. Sorry about the shaky video. Next time I’ll bring my tripod!

    Itinerary:
    1 – 1:20 p.m. — Ke KiaI A O Hula (Traditional Hawaiian Dance)
1:20 – 2:45 p.m. Hula Hui Na Haumana O Alaka (Polynesian Dance Troupe)
    2:45 – 3:30 p.m. — Tupulaga (Youth Dance Group)

Brave New Voices 2008 Team Hawaii 2nd Quarter Final Bout Round 4

    All I Have

In the moment when a first breath marks the difference between fetus and baby all we have are mothers and dreams
But since growing past the edges of hospital bed safety
I found a whole new world of things that I had the potential to have
    So set about hoarding, everything
From the toys in cereal boxs to the coloring books of siblings
And eventually I accumulated more consumables than people I can call friends
Spent more time buying useless possessions than sharing time with my family
I mean last year I spent more of my time reclining in front of a television than I used to spend time with my mother
Bought other peoples broadcasted dreams instead of investing minutes creating my own
So since beginning this life Ive lost all I had at birth

But Im tired of seeing those close to me
Care more about possessions than people
Be concerned with ownership for the sole reason of them being able to say that they own shit
I see people becoming what they own,
    Instead of just being

My sister has consumed so many Apple Products she has officially become the first I-Person

And this isnt me trying to be deep
    This is a realization
That whatever I have in this world
    Is what I value
Whatever you have in this world
    Is what you value

And this isnt a soapbox warning
But last month at a train station I watched a man everyone was aware of but nobody saw
A man everyone listened to but nobody heard
But I dont know how they accomplished that because he, was screaming

    THIS IS ALL I HAVE
Holding a burlap bag of broken dreams and mother melted memories
I wished I could learn piano, and momma always said I could
    He breaks them
Tears trickling, with cigarette burns in his heart
Every bonnie blue eyed girl that walks by reminds me of my daughter I left behind
He hurdles them into concrete scented oblivion
The mug still wet from sweat scented alcohol plays pattycake with the pavement for the last time
Begged alcohol the only pillow to sooth my head to sleeping on city curbs
And the glass from a picture frame complete with abandoned family cuts into the cracks of the sidewalk
    THIS IS ALL I HAVE

And as crashes cause catastrophe on the cement
I get the sense that I understand this man
He is the underlaying shadow reflection of sanity
And I wish I could call him sane
Because I know at some point in his life he shared his moments, experiences, and memories
    He could be somebodys father
    He is somebodys son
    He could be somebodys brother
He is somebodys long lost lover
    He will always be
    Somebodys baby
But he is destroying everything that brought him to this point of no return
    And I can honestly say
That I never want to reach that destination

So I need to start reanalyzing my values
Because buying everything Ive ever wanted cant bring back friends
Breaking meaningless possessions doesnt amount to the pain of losing loved ones
And getting the latest technology cant replace getting to know someone new

I now realize that the only thing Ill have to keep me warm on my death bed
    Are my memories
And the only thing Ill ever really have are recollections; my first kiss,
smell of home cooked family dinners,
sharing sunset with my best friends
laughing at inside jokes from summer camp
The first time I rocked a mic
hearing my baby nephew speak his first words
    following my dreams
And if I take away everything else
This is all I really have
This is all you really have
So if were ever gonna change
    ever gonna grow
ever gonna have our visions seen

We need to keep learning, reading, writing, sculpting, teaching, creating, connecting
    So these shoes
    this shirt
    this phone
and all the other meaningless material we buy at the mall
    Is not
    All
    That we have
